Licuria best Pie again
05 October 2002 Herald Sun
By MICHAEL GLEESON

PAUL Licuria stunned everyone, including himself, when he won last year's Copeland Trophy.

Last night no one was surprised when the hard-working Magpie midfielder made it back-to-back best-and-fairest awards.

Tough midfielder Scott Burns was second, while skipper Nathan Buckley finished in equal eighth place.

The Magpies also announced last night they had re-signed four key players.

Tarkyn Lockyer and Scott Burns have signed on for three years, Jason Cloke for two and Buckley for two more after his contract expires at the end of next year. President Eddie McGuire said coach Mick Malthouse had also re-signed.

Scott Cummings and utility Chad Rintoul announced their retirements last night.

Licuria (41 votes) won by four votes from Burns.

James Clement, who Malthouse had said was unlucky to miss out on All-Australian selection, was one vote away from Burns in third place.

Lockyer and Shane Wakelin tied in fourth place with 33 votes. Sixth were Anthony Rocca and Ben Johnson on 32, followed by Buckley on 31.

The Pies' top three players for the year were also jointly honoured as the best players in the finals. Burns, Licuria and Clement shared the award Collingwood has not been in a position to present for eight years.

Cloke, who missed the Grand Final through suspension, was rewarded for his solid year, winning the Harry Collier Award for best first-year player.

Guernsey Number: 18
Height 179cm
Weight: 86kg
Recruited From: Keon Park Stars/Northern U18/Sydney
Debut: 1997 (Collingwood debut 1999)
Date of Birth: 4 January 1978

Managers Comments:

This Magpie Warrior bleeds for his club. Overcame two-knee reconstructions at 16 and 17 and initially drafted by Sydney.
Traded to Collingwood in 1999 for pick 3. Gutsy, determined, and fearless midfielder. Exceptional stamina, endurance and physique. Hits hard and goes in even harder. Won back to back Copelands in 01 and 02.
Career high 40 disposals in the Qualifying Final against Port Adelaide and completey destroyed his opponent. Has a heart bigger than Pharlap.
Titanium holds his eye socket together. The Terminator aint not nothing on Licuria. He will take apart any man or machine. What this warrior lacks in skill he makes up for in his magpie spirit.

An inconsistent year saw him dropped in round 16 last year. Many see him as a tiring player, and his body is wearing down. I bumped into Licca recently, and asked him how the body was holding up for next season. With a cold, relentless determination he said "I'll be back."

If Nathan Buckley is the heart of the Collingwood team, then Paul Licuria is its soul. A brave, never-say-die midfielder with a heart of gold, Licuria bleeds Black and White blood.

Well I think Roddy has the the basics of Licca already posted so....

I have met Paul a number of times when he has been over in Perth and also when I have been in Melbourne and I must say that this guy is the nicest bloke I have ever met. He just will sign everything you ask him too, take as many photos as you want him too. He is just the type of player you want on your team. A true fans footballer.

He didnt have the best of seasons in 06 but I believe he will be back to his feisty best in 2007. No more time in the reserves fir this number 18.

Bring on season 2007 and more Licca action!

Magpie Bio

The two-time EW Copeland Trophy winner had a solid season in 2006 without being at his absolute best. Licuria still racked up some big stats in the midfield, like in round nine against the Bulldogs (35 touches) and round 21 against the Blues (31 disposals), and averaged nearly 23 touches in 21 games, but spent some time back at Williamstown mid-year after a slight drop in form. It is fair to say that by the end of the season Licuria was again playing some fine footy, demonstrated when he equalled his career-best goal tally with four goals to go with 26 touches in the round 22 rout of the Kangaroos. One of the toughest and most respected players at the club, Licuria, who has played 181 games, will be looking to return to his ultra-consistent best in 2007.
