He was on our list in the late 90's from memory. He was an ok back pocket in the Tony Shaw coaching days. His form dropped off and he ended up at the doggies, they delisted him and he went to Willy... from Willy to Port, to a flag....

Late bloomer i guess.

Started out at Williamstown.
Was picked up by Collingwood.
Delisted by Collingwood and picked up by the Western Bulldogs.
Played at the Bulldogs, then delisted by the Dogs.
Captained the now Bendigo Bombers, essentially with Essendon at the time.
Drafted by Port Adelaide in the PSD.

I dont think we should start counting our losses on Mahoney. He is a decent player but its easy enough when you got stewart dew kicking the ball to you. He has turned his career around and its a great story but i think collingwood did the right thing by delisting him

And is keen on going to freo just to learn the song. Apparently knows more footy songs than any other player.

Agree Dave at the time we delisted him he was a very average player and was drafted for a need at Port and plays that role very well.

Nath, you might find that we traded Josh to the Bullies for Tyson Lane.

When he left the Bullies, he was going to return to Williamstown, but Essendon offered him the captaincy of the then reserves team (VFL).

Dale, I agree with you.................

However................

I choose to forget that Tyson Lane played for Collingwood and as such would like to acknoweldge that Josh was delisted

Thanks for the correction mate.

He played a blinder yesterday.

He's a cog in a well-oiled machine ... Port Adelaide is a great team ... and Mahoney fits in well.

He's no champion, and it's easy to see how he slipped under Collingwood's radar. But if you put some good players around him he gets his chance to shine.

Mahoney was cut the first year MM arrived IIRC. He went to the dogs and started well but quickly faded and was cut after about 2 seasons.

Seperately, we drafted Lokan from the Port Adelaide (SANFL version) reserves, he was only getting the odd game in their firsts.

A year later , Chocco drafts Mahoney from Williamstown -where he had been burning across the HFF.

Most thought he was a genuine VFL quality star at best and that his AFL opportunities had past him by.

Some felt Chocco drafted Josh because he was p1ssed off at us drafting Lokan the year before from his backyard, (Lokan played every game his first year I think). To me it seems doubtful but, with Chocco you never know (remember his grand final speech and tell me that's not a guy that bares some serious grudges).

Anyway, Mahoney has taken his final chance and really made the most of it interestingly, he looks a lot stronger than he ever did at the Pies or Dogs and he has found his niche as a small forward (at both Collingwood and the Dogs he was largely tried as an on-baller or back-pocket).

It must be said however, that he has some bloody good footballers around him, particularly talls and Port are very good delivering the ball into and then holding the ball in the forward line.

Good luck to him, very rarely, but sometimes guys don't blossom/aren't ready until they are approaching mid twenties, rarely do they get a chance that late but, when they do they still have to be able to take it.
