The AFL is contractually obliged to provide one (1) new gimmick every season. Otherwise I guess we’ll all get bored and lose interest or something…

I actually think its a good advantage for us. We get a bye in round 5 to hone any issues and remain fresh and then have another bye 10 weeks later. We also get to manage players well before the short turn around to Anzac Day (we play on April 7 then have a bye then play on April 20 before playing on April 25.

Round zero is a tad silly but I think we do well out of it

^ no doubt. I noted in the Fixture link thread ~

2 BYE rounds, and the break before finals poses as a great result for our senior citizens.
If we win another Prelim that could add up to 4 weeks.

On the other hand, two more chances for the "bye curse" to strike :x

It's almost as confusing as the title of the new Godzilla movie, 'Godzilla minus zero'

I understand that the logic is it's not a full round, just 4 games pulled from rounds later in the year to be played in the northern states. Round 1 is the next week with a full round of games. So whether they call it Round Zero or Opening round or whatever, they're trying to differentiate it from the real round 1.

Just marketing crap.

Thanks Stui…I gets it now…games from the future played before the actual season even starts which gives us an extra bye some time later in the present…fitting really…should suit our very own Craig ‘Marty’ McFly no doubt…all we need now is a DeLorian instead of a team bus.

Instead of ‘zero’ round should have been called Back to the Future round…

Just a bit of AFL marketing. It's annoying as we have to travel as apparently we never travel. The only negative is the reigning Premier has to wait till Round 2 um I mean Round 1 to unfurl the flag.

So... these imbeciles, in true McLaughlin mode, decide our first bye should be the round between April 7 and April 20, instead of April 20 round?
What's wrong with giving both us and Essendopers the bye immediately prior to Anzac day?
Both clubs must be totally sick of having to front up on the 25th April each year on minimal days break from the round prior, or being sitting ducks the week after?

This is a really poor start by Dillon; but that's what happens when you learn the ropes from a narcissistic flog of a previous CEO.

GWS up there hey, they will be seething for revenge , and I cannot see us winning up there, but it may be another heart attack blood pressure match. May as well get it outa the way, if we are to lose, not many teams will win up there, same as at the Gabba, way too hard, get em out of the way early.

Feels strange that we get to play the Saints at our Home ground for their Home Game instead of that crap stadium at Docklands. No doubt the Saints have requested this based on potential Income from a packed MCG.

Zero pretty much sums up the opening round, would have been nice to unfurl the flag on our home ground in the opener.

We play Swans at home in round one so that means we can unfurl our flag then.
I term the current Collingwood attack based strategy “Unceasing Waves” like on a stormy and windy day with rough seas. A Perfect Storm ☔️
