Republicans hold a tiny majority in the House and are likely to lose that at the next election because they are basically batshit crazy.They have no policies,no solutions,only grievance politics to make their base angry about the ‘other’ (gays,transgenders,immigrants,women)and scared of the future.What a miserable lot they are.

First Republican presidential primary happened today, although Donald Trump chose to boycott it. Here are the other candidates who featured:
Ron DeSantis: The governor of Florida and nominal main opponent to Trump. Running on a lot of anti-woke and anti-immigration rhetoric, also walking a tightrope as a staunch Trumpist who's also running against him.
Mike Pence: Former vice-president and governor of Indiana, running as a Christian conservative and mostly tying his reputation to his supposedly courageous refusal to step in and allow Trump to steal the election on 6 January 2021. As a result is enemy #1 for Trump supporters, even though his policies are otherwise indistinguishable and he doesn't particularly go after Trump himself.
Vivek Ramaswamy: The only non-career politician besides Trump in the race and also the youngest candidate at 38, Ramaswamy is a tech entrepreneur who's trying to do the same kind of outsider schtick as Trump in 2016 and Andrew Yang in the 2020 Democratic primaries. Has some pretty extreme views including sending the army to the Mexican border and also openly says climate change is a hoax. Mostly backs Trump.
Chris Christie: Former governor of New Jersey and former presidential primary candidate in 2016, running this election as the main anti-Trump candidate and attacking him at every opportunity.
Nikki Haley: Former South Carolina governor and ambassador to the UN under Trump. Also the only woman running. Taking a slightly more moderate tack than most, including on abortion and climate change.
Tim Scott: Senator for South Carolina, and the only Black candidate running. Pretty standard Republican Christian conservative who backs a federal abortion ban.
Asa Hutchinson: Fairly obscure governor of Arkansas who's also going hard against Trump and for the constitution, etc.
Doug Burgum: Governor of North Dakota and probably the biggest "why is this guy even running?" candidate. Doesn't seem to have any positions that distinguish him from the rest of the pack.

Geezus, not exactly an inspiring bunch. American politics is so different from here, you'd think none of them would get preselected for Labor or Liberal here, maybe One Nation or the Palmer party, but they're actually candidates for POTUS. They all seem to be trying to be Trump or at least appeal to his supporters.

Interesting summary of the Republican candidate launch (or whatever it was) including some commentary on each of the candidates. Disturbingly 6 of the 8 said they would support Trump if he wasn't convicted and won the nomination.

No slight on elderly people with dementia, but I think it’s fair to say they might not be best suited to running for office. Trump has been flying under the radar on that front for a long time, but there are plenty of indications that he’s just as senile as Biden is.

Wether you’re an atheist or hard core believer, surely someone must realise that religion has no place in politics. And neither do criminals, ie, Trump!
Policy musts:
Anti abortion rulings, women’s right to choose.
Gun control stance?
Getting their version of Medicare sorted? Medicaid I think it is.
Sorting the massive mental health/homeless problems.
In a country with such a huge gap between wealthy and poor, is there not one politician not in it for him/herself?
How to turn around the normalisation of mass killings.
Is it even possible for federal government to legislate over such a large and varied population?
As for the border, I’ve watched enough narco shows to realise the US is not helping the situation or the reasons the Mexicans are trying to cross the border in the first place.
It’s sad, the US comes across as loud, crazy and, well, just badly run!
The America I have seen on the various road trips is not that at all. For example, our national parks managers could learn a lot from theirs, they just do it so well. Even the new York subway makes our trains look dirty and unbelievably inefficient. Sydney could learn a lot from Atlanta airport. Getting people between terminals for a start. Denver airport is simply mind bogglingly good! As is their rail system.
Australia will trial loading and unloading planes soon in the way it’s been happening in the states asI remember from 2010!
But put the damn guns away.

Trump supporters are rusted on, they won't vote for someone else, but there'd be plenty of people who would vote against Biden but refuse to vote for Trump.
The Democrat royal family name will attract some people away from Biden.
