Brisbane just putting in an ambit claim to counter our original offer so both teams can claim a win.

In the end we'll probably meet half way and it'll be pick 18, 1st rd 2019 for Beams and two 3rd rd picks.

When your opportunity for a Premiership is opening you take the short term view like we did with Jolly and Ball at the end of 2009.

I mean you spend years in the wilderness, missing finals and rebuilding your list in the hope you find yourself in the exact position we are now in so we must maximise our chances of a Premiership if presented.

Besides with Quaynor possibly attracting a first round bid, Kelly a probable 2nd and two young Irish players signing on it's not like we've taken both our eyes off our future prospects anyway.

The reality is Beams was taken in the same draft as Sidebottom and both are A grade talents.

People need to ask themselves would they be happy accepting pick 18 (not all 1st rounders are equal) and a future 2nd for Steele right about now?

We need a player or two will help us win the 2019 Flag.

Let's look at what some teams around us are adding:
Richmond: Lynch
Essendon: Shiel
Eagles: Kelly
Melbourne: May?

Us adding Beams rather than say pick 14 (if we traded up) has us closer to matching those additions in 2019. We'd also still be adding good young talent in Quaynor and Kelly.

We must be about improving our best 22. Beams does that for sure. He plays ahead of Greenwood, Aish, Thomas, Mayne and Varcoe without question.

Their injury profiles alone are totally different, for starters. Not a good comparison, whichever way one wants to go.

Hope all this optimism is justified... In the AFL Window of Mediocrity, it has been different GFists each time...

It's funny reading some of these posts of those who are saying Beams ain't worth any sort of 1st round pick maybe a couple 3rd round picks
But when he was leaving posters wanted the world for him
If anything he's probably a better player now more mature for sure and more durable than when he left (well ok for the past 18 months anyways)
Like any player he's worth what a club is prepared to pay and the other accept

I was just pleased to see him go. Anything beyond the list vacancy was cream for me. Crisp alone was an improvement. Crisp and JDG was taking Brisbane to the cleaners. Giving Brisbane compensation for relieving them of the burden would be a tragedy.

Be more specific.
