Uh, we had no ruck and a few injuries. And most other top 8 teams got roundly beaten playing them at the Gabba.derkd wrote:
As i said we were roundly beaten up in Brisbane earlier in the year WITH our 'stars' and much better form.

Agree with those who have stated that the loss last night was an expected outcome, given our injuries, the difference in incentives for both teams, and the clear advantage of Marvel to Brisbane's game style.
At first, I was really worried when I watched Fly's presser, but upon rewatching have changed my view.
What others have indicated as "'negative body language'' to me represented his huge displeasure with loss of any kind, but not ''panic'' at all.
I thought his replies were measured, and good. When asking the journalist "what would you have done?'' he was not ''searching for answers from the audience'', rather he was using this to introduce the depth of thinking that goes along with such decisions. Of course, he expected the answer that everyone on the outside saw, ie of moving Howe back. He then explained why the coaches decided not to make that obvious move, because Howe was negating Harris-Andrews almost completely, and then in the 3rd quarter also kicked 2 goals as a bonus. I think he actually invited this discussion to educate the audience about the complexity of the decision making process that is not visible from outside. Finally, I liked his comments on ''form''. He refuses to dig us into a hole of a ''form slump'', instead presenting ''form'' as an outcome of actions. Last week, our actions were such that the outcome was a win, this week this did not occur, and our task is to address the reasons for this. I also liked how he presented this as just a moment and we are not static. Once the finals starts, an entirely new season begins. I think the apparently downcast appearance of the presser was a measure of how much Fly dislikes defeat, and will now be focussed on getting the most from our team in September, whatever that path looks like over the next 2 weeks.

Good comments MTTM. I would also add that there is no way Fly would publicly highlight our weaknesses or signal what we will do to improve. All he can do is speak in meaningless generalities.
The important stuff is what is said in-house to our players. I remain confident that, when push comes to shove, we will rediscover our manic intensity we displayed earlier in the season.

pies v lions
My thoughts exactly..Pies2016 wrote:Just a comment on the Lions. I thought last night was the perfect example of why they play Marvel so well but struggle at the G. Their small forwards are very elusive and quick and they get a great return from the first chaos kick that comes out of the Marvel square. The G doesn’t give up that “ shot on goal “ kick as easily, so their forwards tend to be either drawn up the ground kick chasing or choose to stay back closer to goal where the opposition can set up in front of them. I wouldn’t underestimate how bigger difference the game could look if we were to play them on the G in September.
Still was SO frustrating and MADDENING to see the lions in first at the centre, get the ball out to his team mate standing there UNATTENDED.
How the hell is that allowed to happen, time and time again!!!!!Of course it was then a big kick forward and we were out of position and caught behind.

But what I would add is that good ‘form’ builds confidence and belief.
Would hate to enter finals on the back of a 1-4 win-loss record. Would mean the boys have only tasted victory once in 7-8 weeks, and might ‘forget’ how to win, or lose confidence in making that in-boars kick, or leaving their man to help another contest, or playing me-first football.
A loss next week isn’t the end of the world, but gee wiz, would hate to be easily dispatched, especially if results this weekend go against the Bombers and they effectively have nothing to play for. Finals might be ‘another season’ but players won’t quickly forget their ‘form slump’ from just two weeks prior.

I thought beforehand that this would be a hard game for us to win.
Just a few points.
As everyone, including Blind Freddy, has pointed out the core of our midfield players are too slow, Its slow in the middle often and its glacial around the ground. Pendles compensates with his skill but Adams is slow and his disposal has never been to AFL standard.
Kick outs are still a big worry. We lose far too many contests from the kickout. Both marking and winning the contested ball afterwards has been an issue at least since the first Melbourne game. We seem to have no-one capable of consistently taking a contested field mark. And more often than not, that lost ball is going straight back into the forward line leading to many scoring opportunities. Howe is our best kick out without a doubt as he is quite creative and reliable. Maynard should be banned from taking kick outs. he kicks it to the same spot every time with the aforementioned results.
Too often opposition small forwards are scoring against us and we seem to have no effective counter to that.
I agree with Rudeboy about Lipinski. He doesnt like it hard. There was a moment on our half backline when Lipinski was tackled near the boundary line. As soon as he felt contact he just purposefully dropped the ball. If he had kept possession he would have been carried over the boundary line and safety. After he dropped it, it was swept up by the Lions player and the ball ended up in a dangerous position on the forward line. We dont need players like that. He's managed one good game since his return and was almost unsighted last night. I would rather give a kid a run than Lipinski.
As for the finals, I'm beginning to think the only way we will win the big one is if everything goes perfectly for us in terms of regaining our injured and out players, plus a miraculous return to our top form. We will influence the final result but I can't see our team with its inherent weaknesses making the big one this year.
Also I feel really sorry for poor Jakob Ryan. He was trying hard but hadnt picked up the pace of the game yet when he gets smashed in a marking contest. I hope he is okay and will be back and wiser for the run.

I’m clinging on to the fact that vs Port we had top spot to play for, and won.RudeBoy wrote:Good comments MTTM. I would also add that there is no way Fly would publicly highlight our weaknesses or signal what we will do to improve. All he can do is speak in meaningless generalities.

Last week we had Top 2 to secure due to other results, and won.
In many ways the results of the past few weeks (losses) have been in ‘meaningless’ games. We don’t have the big key elite forwards to kick a wining score when other players aren’t brining their full intensity to the contest, so once a few players aren’t up for the contest, the score line will suffer.
I’m confident come week one of the finals we’ll be manic beyond belief.

We need Nick Daicos taking kick outs again.
We need Nick Daicos’s runs from D50 again.
We also need Nick Daicos’s speed in the middle.
We need Nick Daicos’s finishing in front of goal.
Unfortunately we only have one Nick Daicos, and he’s injured, and no certainty to return or be match-fit.

I think one question was answered
Going forward Cox and Cameron must play
Also Adams … still a butcher, not sure him and Mitchell work
Daicos and whe are best wingers
Sidey to play the fwd role, no room for ginnavin, hill and mcreery so ginnavin sub
Like crisp through middle
Elliott 40% and degoey 60% go through midfield, so that one of them is in guts,
Moore when he comes back has to be high defender
Got to use Cox when he is not rucking to be the lead up fwd for get out of jail long kick from defence …, teams are making it hard for our run got to have a get out to a 50/50, Cox it is ..,

Mate always appreciate your viewPies2016 wrote:Just on Lipinski, nobody was complaining about him when he was 6th in last years best and fairest or found the pill 25 times and laid 8 tackles seven days ago.
There is no doubt he is down on his best but two consecutive shoulder reconstructions can do that to the best of players. He does seem a bit timid on occasions and that’s likely due to self preservation with the finals looming.
If we can see it, then the coaches can see it, so they will decide if he warrants being omitted or not.
But based on his history at the club, let’s be convinced first, there are alternative players who will likely perform better than his efforts from 7 days ago and for the entire 2022 season.
Here’s a alternate thought
He seems to want o play bruise free football because another knock on the shoulder be spell curtains
Last year he was fantastic and I’ve cut him some slack this year coming back from injury but there’s a clear pattern in his play now
He’s not putting his head or body over it and he’s scared of getting whacked again so he rushes his disposals as well
I watched him closely the past month and there’s several instances a game he isn’t going full throttle at it mate
I would prefer a kid who’s going to do whatever it takes to get the ball
Last year that was Lipinski this year it isn’t

And I do too. We just cannot carry passengers who don’t go in hard in AFL footy. It is a mandatory requirement and Collingwood should make a statement and drop him for someone who does. This might suit the selectors in deciding the players going out for the gun players who will come in.RudeBoy wrote:Sadly, I have to agree with you QM67.
