He was conspicuous with his presence in this big game.
I can show you amazing footage of daisy Thomas from years ago as well. Still no reason to pay him $700k today. Same goes for Peter McKenna as well.

I hadn't watched it since 2011 myself (which is about the time I switched off the TV and went for a walk/cry).

I know you're being facetious but Varcoe was very good that game and if we get him I'm prepared to give him at least a chance in the hope he can produce some opportunistic goals and provide some spark to an at times very dour side.
I'm actually not. I left the ground at three-quarter time.

I did see him put the 'Pies on the back foot with his two goals in the first few minutes of that game. I had been of the view that because they were both on Davis it meant nothing but I see that he put Benny Johnson to the sword in that last effort, so maybe he can play.

With Varcoe it is a matter of wait and see. H does not want to be part of us. Hopefully Varcoe will make every effort to be the best he can be at Collingwood. Whist they are very different players they are both B graders. With a bit of luck we could be on the right side of the trade.

Beams is a massive short term loss. We have invested 100 games into him and despite that fact that he has already won a Copeland, you would think that his best footy is ahead of him. Pick 5 in an unknown quantity and Crisp has some potential. Only time will determine how much of a long term win/loss situation this is for the Pies.

I cant help but think that anything other than a big name coming in that we will have had a poor trade period.

Look at the Names that have left - Daisy, Heath, H and now Beams.

There well may be understandable reasons for them all and you can dispute the value or quality of a few however they are all players that have performed on the big stage, they all have plenty of games in them and they are all household names.

We haven't recruited in a "name" to replace them.
I know we got before this Ball and Jolly - its not another "collingwood never gets a big name" comment.

Its purely about who has just left of late versus who we have brought in.

A Boyd, Aish, Treloar, Shiel coming in would make a huge difference to what we have lost versus who we have brought in.
Cant see it happening though now.

Yeah, that was a good game by Varcoe, or a good quarter at least. And that was what? 3 years ago? I thought we weren't allowed to think about that period? Back when Dale Thomas was called 'the best there is' and we were beating sides by 70 points every second week. Back when we managed back-to-back minor prems for the first time in 70 years.

Varcoe performs once in a blue moon, why on earth would Buckley want someone like that? If all we end up with is pick 5 and Varcoe for the loss of Beams and Harry it will be the biggest cluster**k since... well not that long ago actually.

We'd likely end up with Greenwood, Varcoe, Crisp and Pick 5 for the loss of Beams and Harry. It was better than the prospect coming into trade period for the Pies.

We have Darcy Moore we lost Pick 8, but we get Pick 5, so it's not all bad really, sure we lose Beams, not really that sad to lose Harry as much as Beams. But we can cover them now at least.

It all depends on Crisp. If he becomes a good player for us, then maybe we'll look back and see it as a good deal, but right now, it looks a decidedly ordinary deal to me.

Reading all these posts you'd swear there were grey skies over Collingwood.

Who knows, Crisp might be a bit of fresh air!

I actually thought we'd brought in similar to that in Moore, Scharenberg, Freeman, Grundy, Broomhead, and Kennedy. They're all high draft picks and may all end up being "big names" but they are just developing kids at the moment.

I am sure with time under Robert Harvey he could develop into a good player , seems to be an ok player from the limited opportunities he's already had. Greenwood and Pick 5 coming in as well can be anything as well.

I'd hope this turns out well for us, but even if this trade doesn't as far as Crisp goes there is that Pick 5, and all that talent we already have. May have to suffer a bit now but the future isn't that bad.

The difference is that a Boyd, Aish, Treloar, Shiel coming in will almost definitely enhance the playing group along with the guys you mentioned. A Varcoe and Crisp MIGHT enhance the group but it is not a total certainty.

Exactly right, weve lost a starting 22 now 4 times and Beams probably our second best player.
We need players 2-4 years in the system, proven and capable of making a top 5 b&f

Look, the way things stand, if Brisbane won't put up a player they won't get Beams. And I hope they don't. It's unlikely that Varcoe and Crisp will play ten games between them, Crisp would do very well in the VFL side and be about 6th in line for a senior gig unless we have another year of injuries, and Varcoe will be like all the other senior blokes Buckley has picked up, Russell, Lynch, Young, I was excited about all three of them and they did nuthin'. I'd add White to that but he's young enough and talented enough to do anything, and I think he will, given the right development.
I've been listening to 'Plow' Wallace on the radio about all this stuff. My God that guy is hopeless! I had no idea! I thought he'd have to know what he's talking about with all his experience, but he's as dumb as a box of hammers! He has no doubt that the Beams deal will be done for 5 & 25, and how dare we ask for more! Another Collingwood hater, and nearly as poor a journalist as Tubby Robinson. And if he says 'stumped up' one more time I'm gonna do a foofer valve!!!

My point was that you listed:

Boyd - drafted 2013
Aish - drafted 2013
Treloar - Concessional draft 2012
Shiel - Concessional draft 2012

And as I said, we've added equally talented kids via those drafts. You're confusing talent with opportunity. Come back in 5 years and tell me how we stack up but these guys are not "big name" recruits regardless of their potential to acheive that. None of them have shown any more than Langdon, Williams or Elliott to date.

Now if you'd said Jack, Boak, Shuey or Bruest I would have paid attention.
