In addition, Griffen was selected as a club captain, not something that Beams track record off the field would support.

Beams 2012 was better than Griffen's 2013 and he's still only 24, a goal kicker and probably yet to reach his prime. Both are excellent footballers but Beams equates to a better long term investment than Griffen for mine. Certainly better than what Brisbane are arrogantly offering us.

yeah, 2012 Beams racked up about 750 possessions across 24 games and 2013 is one of only 2 seasons he's averaged less than a goal a game.

Beams has a higher value than Griffen given that he's 4 years younger. If the Giants do get a deal done they'll show Brisbane how unrealistic they've been in their dealing.

If it's true I doubt Aish is considering coming to us, reckon he'll want to get to the Crows, Crows cough up picks 10 and 30 to Brisbane, and they'll pass on picks 5 and 10 to us.

It's not exactly what we're after, but it's a damn sight better than 5 and 20 something, and remember it's still early in trade week, we could possibly trade one of those picks for a decent player.o

I believe that meeting is set for 2015. Not sure Phil Walsh will be invited though.

71 pages later and I still haven't posted in this thread but that's because I've been devoted to other commitments in my life admittedly.

All I can say is that I was initially gutted with the news that Beams wanted to leave for the club for 'family reasons'. In light of recent actions such as his refusal to attend the Copeland Trophy night and the potential compensation we might gain in return such as pick 5 and James Aish I've started to come around to the idea that this might not be so bad despite the gaping hole that Beams will leave at the club in the immediate future.

Whatever happens I struggle to see how Beams will be playing for us beyond next year even though the deal with Brisbane may not go ahead. Unfortunately if he stays beyond this year there's a massive chance he would ditch us via free agency at the end of next year and join Brisbane anyway so the best option we can have is to trade him now and get something decent in return. Pick 5 and Aish would be fantastic for us even though it would hurt in the short-term but whether it eventuates remains to be seen.

i think 5, 10 and 25 would be needed if it was just draft picks (that way, we could get Levi with pick 25). there is just too much risk associated with draft picks. I mean look at how Freeman and Scharenberg are travelling right now. I know that after one year you dont make a judgment on draft picks, but both boys have suffered just the most horrendous injuries. They could both flame out.

I'll say it again. Beams is one of the best 10 (maybe top 5 given his goal kicking ability) mids in the comp.

If I remember correctly, Aish wrote a letter to N Buckley as a youngster. Was Bucks his favourite player?
Maybe there is a connection there?

The teacher

DAVID Shepherd was in his classroom at Concordia College one morning when a Year 9 student named James Aish walked in with a big smile on his face.

Shepherd was Aish's home class teacher and PE teacher who knew him better than most, and realised something was up but didn't bother asking.

"He didn't say anything the whole time, then waited until every other student had left the room and came up to me and said 'Hey Shep, keep this to yourself, but check this out'."

Aish, who was just 15 at the time, was holding a letter from Collingwood champion Nathan Buckley.

"I think James had written to him and Buckley wrote back as encouragement, but he didn't want to make a big deal of it in front of everyone and asked me to keep it to myself which I'm doing until now I suppose," Shepherd said.

That is the sort of kid Aish is.

If anyone at any high school in Adelaide was ever at risk of tall poppy syndrome it was Aish - two SANFL flags before his 18th birthday and touted as a top-five AFL draft pick for three years.

But according to Shepherd, you wouldn't know it.

"Quite seriously, he is a really, really good kid," Shepherd said.

"He's very humble considering what he's achieved, he doesn't talk himself up or strut around the school.

"He is quiet without being shy, highly respected and loved by his peers and easy to get along with."

As well as being a talented footballer, Aish is also a good student.

"He's a good thinker and doesn't accept the bare bones, he's prepared to do the extra work which isn't easy when you've got an AFL career ahead of you," Shepherd said.

"But he understands there's more to life than football. He's into psychology, how the brain works and what makes people tick."
