Re: #37 Oleg Markov
Hugh Greenwood was delisted by the Suns in 2021 (along with a couple others) to enable them to have the requisite 3 national draft selections. Greenwood and 1 of the other delistings were promised they would be redrafted to the rookie list. Greenwood, had a year to run on his contract at the time.Pies2016 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 30, 2024 4:39 pm I’ve never heard of an example yet where any delisted player who has been promised a spot on the rookie list ( and that happens a lot ) has been picked up by another club in the rookie draft. It won’t be happening with Markov or Johnson either ( unless BOTH parties were to have a change of heart leading up to the draft )
North Melbourne came in with a 2 year offer for Greenwood and he signed as a DFA.
Not an identical scenario, but pretty close... It can happen. In saying that, neither Markov or AJ have the appeal that Greenwood did at the time as a best 22 starting mid.

Good pick up ! I remember the “ controversy “ now. So under those circumstances, there would remain a possibility of Markov going elsewhere.Boogie Knights wrote: ↑Thu Oct 31, 2024 11:33 amHugh Greenwood was delisted by the Suns in 2021 (along with a couple others) to enable them to have the requisite 3 national draft selections. I guess for any other club considering him, the offer would need to be improved on what Collingwood have put to him and that’s probably what Collingwood are banking on in order to keep him. Time will tell.
As an aside, I still don’t understand how any player can be under contract and the club even be allowed to delist them while they remain contracted. I guess the club would sell it they are putting that player in a position where they may even get a better offer from another club, than their current contact. I would also imagine, it would need for that player to agree to it. Kinda makes a mockery of any contract in the first place.
Cheers

If teams aren't under salary cap stress, delisting a contracted player opens up a spot on the list that could be used in various ways. I guess a club can delist a player, still be on the hook for their salary and then draft or sign a DFA to that spot that would have more chance of playing. The player then has the opportunity to look at other opportunities. If they sign elsewhere via DFA or SSP, the new contract voids the old.
There can be benefits to both, however unlikely...

I was thinking along the exact same lines, however reading the article (link below), 10 players have just gone through the same process. Gunston who was still under contract has agreed to be delisted, seems confident of just being rookied, and does not mention the risk of being picked up by another club.Boogie Knights wrote: ↑Thu Oct 31, 2024 3:15 pm would have more chance of playing. Re: Oleg Markov - Leggie
Another time where Melbourne just copies another clubs work. He was ours, then they take him with pick 1 in the PSD (Same year where Ben Cousins got to Richmond). And then he goes to a club that has absolutely no idea how to work with and develop their players. 36 games they got from him.
Did we know the Dees had him circled? We had pick 11 in the RD and took Tristan Francis (Liam Picken went #30 and Luke Bruest #47 ). How different Jarrahs career could have been on Collingwoods list from 2009-12 and possibly longer (He kicked 40 goals in 2011). I know he had some off-field troubles and many thought we dodged a bullet, but who knows what could have been in a Collingwood jumper?

I guess I'm the only one who knows the true story of the Liam Jurrah story, as I was the one who introduced him to Collingwood and brought him down from Yuendumu to live with me and my family. Sadly, the truth is that Collingwood at the time did not have the skill set within their footy department or the vision to necessary to draft Liam. Our record and reputation of developing Indigenous players back then was poor. At one stage I personally had a heated argument with the footy department when it was clear Liam would be drafted by Melbourne. Collingwood had been given the inside running to draft Liam, but all they could see were the difficulties, not the possibilities, of recruiting such a prodigious talent. As for Liam, he had left his desert community to play for his beloved Magpies, but ended up at the Dees, a divided and completely dysfunctional club. That was never going to be a good environment for Liam. Despite this, he had a couple of great years in the AFL, nominated for the rising star, winning 'Mark of the Year' and kicking the fastest first 50 goals for about 30 yrs. Not a bad return for a desert footballer, with no professional training background.Presti35 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 31, 2024 9:23 pmAnother time where Melbourne just copies another clubs work. Re: Oleg Markov (Leggie)
So thinking forward to 2025, I wonder how much cash we’ve saved on our salary cap by halving AJ and Leggy. Did we do this to squeeze into the 2025 cap. Or are we making a saving and if so, I wonder how we might plan to use that cash next year. I’m not expecting a lot but everything’s good in a game of margins. With Titch, Sidey, Cox Howe and Elliot all potentially on the retirement block next year I’m wondering if we have the cash for another serious FA splash.
Ed Allen kicked our last goal of the year at the 58minute mark of the last quarter
