Both he and King out of contract at end of 2024. We also know the biggest deals don’t happen in 6 weeks they often play out over 18-24 months. Could that be a potential impediment of letting go of next years first rounder (ie that we’ll want to use it in a bigger trade?)
How could we afford him???
Are we talking about going after him in next year's draft.
Or are we talking about snaring him in this year's intake.
Got no picks, and probably no money or trade bait.
Its probably horseszhit - BUT. One of these days we will probably try and land a big name player from somewhere. Hypothetically, lets look at the last couple of big deals for a clue on how we might do something (I assume at the end of the 2024 season at the earliest).

Jezz Cameron: GWS received: Picks #13, #15, #20 and 1x 2021 first-round pick, Geelong received: Jeremy Cameron, 2x 2021 second-round picks

(forget its the cats - there is an interesting article here on all the dealing that lead up to the Cats being able to actually land Cameron... https://www.geelongcats.com.au/news/145 ... 0of%202020. )

Tom Lynch: Restricted Free Agent - Suns got pick 3 as compo

Luke Jackson: Demons got A first rounder, a future first and second rounder, but gave freo back #44 and #67.

Tim Kelly: Geelong got #14, #24, #37 and a future first rounder, but got back #57 and a future third rounder

So what does all this tell us? Superstars cost a bomb. They have to want to come to your club (I thin we're doing a good job on that front), you have to have the cap space (a gun forward will cost $1m a season and you will need to sign them for 6, 7, 8+ years and then you need some kind of trading capital if they are not a free agent.

So by the end of next year we will probably have 2025 first rounder, we may no longer have the 2024 first rounder if we use it for Shultz. We might have some players we could trade (?) but the reality is (as others have pointed out here) you need to start preparing these things probably 3-4 years in advance to have the draft hand/capital to satisfy the other club. We dont have that, and are unlikely to have that in the next coupld years unless we are going to offload/re-home one or more players who are 23-27 and absolute guns. Thats the one age bracket we are thin in IMO. Probablyour best chance might have been had we lost Jordy last year in a trade or received compo (although winning a flag would have diluted that too). Thankfully he stayed and we snatched a flag in some part due to him.

So we probably stick to the fringes - get a bit here and there for old guys, work on father/son and academy, try and find affordable players who want to come to us, develop younger guys we have and then see what happens. Maybe we're there for Ben King in 2026 when he's a free agent?

Still love to know if Sydney picked up some more of Grundy's contract in the Adams deal.

Gut says we will have somewhat of a war chest but guess we'll see.
The match day thread is for unfiltered BS knee jerk reactions. The time for level headed comment comes after.

I am positive I have seen journos quoted both ways (we're paying the original AND we are paying a slightly reduced rate...). Cant recall the sources, and they're probably making it up anyway.

They can't have the F1 or we don't have 2 x 1st rounders for Ben King next year. ;)

Schultz is 26yo, got picked up from the VFL, Freo delisted him 2 years ago, and this is, his first year on their main list.
Pick19 is more than enough., no way future first rounder.
When did Freo become ars#hol#s to deal with?

Then we’ll just have to win the flag again next year and give Freo nothing!

Maybe you should add ‘baseless’ to the nameless and faceless whispers

The problem is that every footy Dept knows pick #19 is already at least pick #23 on the night. By the time you now add Croft as a father son nomination and min of three academy players inside the top 20, then #19 is nowhere near allowing any club to pick the nineteenth best U18 player in the country.
So when you compare that against an established player who just finished fifth in Freos best and fairest behind Serong, Brayshaw, Ryan and Jackson, then I can understand why the Dockers would want more. Whether they get it or not, is another matter but it’s a fair request. Collingwood will be doing everything to avoid discussions that include their future first rounder, so hopefully an additional swap around of later picks would get it done.

An interesting take is our Rookie list. As it stands with Murley delisted, we still have 5 rookies:

* Johnson
* Carmichael
* Begg
* Dean &
* Markov

(Johnson with a recent two year extension would be the likeliest to be upgraded onto the Primary list providing a spot for another Rookie)

With our Primary list being reduced at the time of post by four players:

* Adams
* Draper
* Ruscoe &
* Bianco

and a live draft hand (Pre Schultz trade) of Picks 19, 34, 39, 80 and 98, it shall be an interesting few days and draft period. Got the feeling Wright may swoop and snare Jack Billings with Pick 80 and we cop his full salary/contract ($500,000 and two years) remaining.

Schultz seems to likely go for a future first rounder at time of this post leaving us with Picks 19, 34 and 39 in this Draft unless a sweetener is going to Freo. Interesting times ahead.

Billings will be in the black and white next year almost 100%…maybe change of scenery will reinvigorate him and will live up to his potential….as we know a highly rated schoolboy (mates with De Goey and Moore) who went pick 3 in same draft that Bontempelli went 4 but has underachieved significantly….free hit really. Would cost us nothing except for outdated contract $$$ but just might end up being another masterstroke that helps us to #17

If we win the flag again next year, our future first rounder will be pick 18-22 after bids and concessions.

****, give it to them , ask for a 2nd or 3rd round pick this year coming back, and get it done.
Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down.

Still trying to rectify that draft. Scharenberg, Freeman, Aish.

Nothing wrong with the Freeman and Shazza selections.

Shazza got a whole slew on new injuries so no lack of due diligence there.

Freeman had a storm of unforeseeable leg injuries again due diligence done.

As for Aish I have no opinion either way.

It was certainly unfortunate and crippled our recruitment for a long time.
