Recruiters are also largely victims of the draft order they select players, Hine no different to the other recruiters. There's nothing a recruiter can do if the player they want gets recruited with the pick before they get to pick. I would have thought a success rate of about 50% is about right for a good recruiter and Hine is up there with the best. You have good years and bad years. 2014 was bad year. Patrick Cripps you can blame Hine for. And if a player like Scharenberg, Hine recruits, ends up with three knee reconstructions it's not something you can blame Hine for.

Clubs take risks in the draft and as a risk taker I commend them. However some come off and some don’t. For example Dawes had a shoulder issue when drafted but managed to get over it and play in a premiership. Some like Nathan Freeman and Marsh just couldn’t get to consistent AFL fitness levels while others like Danny Roach, Leigh Walker and Sean Rusling got serious injuries after being drafted. Years ago we recruited some players like Graeme Reichman and Mark Orval who had tremendous reputations but leg injuries killed their dreams. I also think if we had the medical enhancements we have today, they may have played again. It’s the luck of the draw as well as doing your homework on potential draftees. Overall every club has stuffed up at some point and I don’t share in the view that Collingwood has been worse than others. Logically that is incorrect when forensically looking at the records of all the clubs. It’s not an exact science but suffice to say that it is an improving one. Before Hine, Collingwood poached the guy from Essendon (whose name escapes me) and then Rendell before he made some rash comments about recruiting indigenous players.

I term the current Collingwood attack based strategy “Unceasing Waves” like on a stormy and windy day with rough seas. A Perfect Storm ☔️

Clearly the 2013 draft was a fail.
That being said, it’s Hard to fault Hine picking up Sharenberg… bold given his injury history but, he we have to remember he was touted as the best junior in the country since Judd.
At the time he was a steal at pick 6.

Freeman on the other hand was clearly a miscalculation, yet still found another AFL club prepared to punt on his potential. That would suggest Hine wasn’t alone in his talent assessment of the young man.

Hine still pulled Langdon, Marsh, Oxly and Dwyer from the bleachers in that years draft.
He followed that up the next year by bringing in Degoey, Moore, Maynard, and Cox.

Hine’s failures are magnified much more than his success.

The imbecile you are referring to was Noel Judkins; the Saboteur.
He is to blame for the 1999 DISASTER which cost us Pavlich, and ultimately the 2002/2003 flags. Oh, but we got Roach; and Fraser [pick 1].
He also netted us Olarenshaw from the Dopers; a bargain 1st round pick swap waste, which could have secured Ramanaskus, who was most serviceable for them until illness ended his career.

Sholley's last few years also nearly sent us to the brink, and gave Tony Shaw NOTHING to build around. He fluked Presti and Tarrant, but that's about it, while burning our other precious picks on trash.

Still waiting on Hine to find us a small Indigenous forward, ala Brad Dick.
And the crickets keep chirping with each passing draft.

The AFL introduced the supplementary list as it anticipated a lack of player availability for all clubs due to COVID.

Hine did very well to get a such proven AFL campaigner on our ‘reserve’ playing list. Not to mention the importance of having a senior indigenous player/coach in our ranks in the ‘Do Better’ era.

He deserves some props.

Let's also remember that just as players can perform very differently when surrounded by new people and thinking, so too can any employee.

Not to mention the way drafted players are then developed, which is out of the recruiter's hands.

It would be impossible to tell if Hine drafted well in the past and players were then mis-developed and mis-managed, or if Hine himself is now able to do his job properly without giant interfering egos breathing down his neck.

Aside from outright d*heads at one end of the scale or freak individual talent at the other, the organisation has a massive impact on the performance of everyone. The simplest and most vivid example is the improvement in disposal and ball movement this year over last year. But this principle applies to absolutely every employee.
In the end the rain comes down, washes clean the streets of a blue sky town.

Derek Hine talking all things draft and our recent draftees

Post by Pies2016 »

Great interview between Cal Twomey and Derek Hine highlighting various individuals from our recent drafts and the hopeful outcomes for the upcoming National draft. Hopefully the link above is good to go. If not, just go to the AFL app and refer to the latest road to the draft podcast.

Main points of interest - Hine anticipates taking a first rounder to the draft and all things equal, will select next best available.
A number of our recent draftees have been “ pulled out of the program “ through the course of the season, where they have been re skilled through match sim and development work ( rather than playing VFL ) before coming back in their new role. These players include Draper, who has come back as a midfielder and Harrison and Murley, who had both been trialled in various positions over the year. Hine mentioned Harrison had genuinely been very close to senior selection at start of year but Covid knocked him about for months ( and now has a repeat hammy that’s wiped him out )
He talks a lot about the strengths and areas of improvement required from our recent draft picks. Hines comments on Ginnivan were interesting. He was glowing in praise of Ginivans professionalism and work ethic over the off season and throughout 2022.
If you’ve got a spare 30 mins, take the time to listen. It’s all Collingwood and it gives a a real insight into the extensive work that goes into profiling a potential draftee.

It’s a pity he didn’t talk more about the 2020 crop. Maybe Henry and Poulter are both out the door already
Ed Allen kicked our last goal of the year at the 58minute mark

Thanks for that. Very interesting. Interesting he views it as a shallow draft and with us having 3 third rounders.

Maybe they will try to package it up into a second rounder and keeppicks forthemid season draft?

What he said about Arlo Draper was also encouraging. Let’s hope he can keep developing.
Yes his comments on this years draft were intresting. And I think he was definitely talking down our academy players.

“That is frightening”: Why Collingwood’s thrifty recruiting could go down in history
https://www.sen.com.au/news/2023/07/05/ ... o-down-in/

"...Gerard Healy could not be more effusive in his praise of Collingwood’s recruiting after they added Tom Mitchell, Bobby Hill, Dan McStay, Billy Frampton and Oleg Markov in the off-season."

"Healy spoke glowingly of the work done by the Magpies recruiters, led by Derek Hine, in bringing the quintet into Craig McRae’s side which is hurtling towards September. "
