I think "massacre" undersells the events of 1965-6 somewhat - it tends to convey the sense of a couple of blokes with guns opening fire on people in a single, short incident. "Genocide" at least captures the thorough-going nature and scale of that which occurred. It's not strictly accurate, as you both say, but calling it a "purge" doesn't really capture the deliberate, brutal murder of half a million people, either.

One of the great political triumphs of the 20th Century is that both extremes of politics have contrived to leave us without language that properly captures - and conveys the horror of - such hideous events. Although there is a better general awareness of the fun and frolic engaged in by the Khmer Rouge at a later time, I don't think there is adequate language to describe that, either.

Yeah it's a pretty good action flick.

I watched The Lovely Bones last night. It was very moving. I almost cried in the scene when the Song to the Siren came in. That song always gets me. Especially when I'm not expecting it.

Last night I watched The Equaliser on Foxtel. Not bad at all, played to the formula of the ex (pick an agency) very capable killer now trying to live the quiet life, gets pissed off when some bad guys start messing with people he likes so he takes care of business, except it had the twist. A large part of the "tasking care of business" was done off screen and left to the imagination.

Loved the scene where the russian bad guy is sitting down eating, his lackey goes off to the dunny, and a few minutes later the hero walks up, places the lackey's broken sunglasses on the table and calmly says "He not coming back"

Great movie, kind of Sci-Fi, coming of age, quirky comedy, feel good film. Great performances, simple style and just really, well, nice.

Pretty good suspense/horror film heavily inspired by the last decent era of horror in the 70s/80s. I fell completely out of love with the genre thanks to all the goreporn like Saw and Hostel or the chuck worthy gross horror like The Human Centipede. Returning to tension, uneasiness and buildup based on your own mind rather than smashing your face in a dumpster of dirty syringes make It Follows the first decent horror movie I've seen in decades.

4 Stars.

It's shameful that the deliberate murder of of so many Chinese by the Indonesians is not as well known as it ought to be in Australia.
