Lol. That's a great book! I read it at the age of 16 and it played a big role in developing my interest in world cinema.
As for watching Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom, please don't. It's pretty nasty. Somehow I don't think it was the film Father Bob was talking about here:

": the largest grossing independant film of all time, til the blair witch project, thats a big title! landmark independant film that focused on the most emotional themes of the time - anti establishment, two sided justice, racial segregation and prejudice, and social ideals."

The only list I could find includes all films that have ever been included in any edition, so my figure is from a list of just under 1,100. Anyway, here's my breakdown:
